CVS and Walgreens are set to introduce abortion pills to shelves this month

Following regulatory changes by the FDA, the two leading U.S. pharmacy chains in the announced the availability of mifepristone with a prescription.

CVS and Walgreens, two of the largest pharmacy chains in the U.S., are certified to start selling abortion pills as early as this month following the FDA regulatory changes made last year. 

This significant development comes as a response to regulatory changes implemented by the Food and Drug Administration last year, allowing retail pharmacies to dispense the medication.

Access to mifepristone, commonly known as the abortion pill, will require a prescription. Both CVS and Walgreens have obtained certification to distribute the pills, marking a pivotal moment in healthcare history.

This decision by the pharmacy giants is particularly timely amidst the backdrop of increasing restrictions on abortion access in various parts of the country. President Biden praised their initiative, acknowledging the critical importance of expanding options for women's healthcare.

The cost of the abortion pill is set at $79 by CVS, with potential insurance coverage for eligible patients. 

While the availability of abortion pills at retail pharmacies represents a significant step forward, legal obstacles loom large. The Supreme Court is scheduled to address the issue later this month, with potential implications for the future of reproductive rights in the country.
