Is Taylor Swift a big reason vinyl sales are surging?
Vinyl sales are continuing to grow, and Taylor Swift is selling more record albums than the next top 7 artists combined.
The era of Taylor Swift’s domination continues. This time it’s not a streaming record, but a vinyl one.
Taylor Swift was the top selling artist on vinyl in 2023, so much so, that one out of every 15 records sold in 2023 was a Taylor Swift album.
She sold nearly 3.5 million vinyl albums last year. That’s more than the next 7 artists combined (Lana Del Ray, Tyler the Creator, Travis Scott, Olivia Rodrigo, Kendrick Lamar, Metallica and the Beatles).
Records as a whole are making a huge comeback. In 2023, total vinyl albums purchased were 14% higher than the year before that.
Vinyl dominated the 1900's until the 1980's, when cassette tapes took over, followed by CDs in the 1990's, digital downloads in the 2010s and then streaming.
But in 2021 vinyl became the most popular way to buy albums again.
So why the resurgence? A big reason was that people began collecting records during the pandemic, and their popular was amplified by social media.
Other reasons people say vinyl is popular again include:
People like owning physical objects
They’re nice to display like art
The sound quality is arguably better than digital recordings
Retro is cool
It’s a good way to support artists
