The US Supreme Court recently eliminated racial preference in college admission, but a new study by Harvard economists found another type of affirmative action - one favoring the wealthiest applicants.
The report shows students from the top .01 percent wealthiest families, earning more than $611,000 a year, are more than twice as likely to gain admission to elite universities when compared to others with similar test scores.
The study found the largest advantage for children of wealthy families is legacy admission. It showed higher income students were accepted at much higher rates at schools their parents went to, compared with applicants with similar qualifications.
