How will AI transform religion?
Artificial Intelligence is already being used to translate and explain religious texts. Now faith leaders are grappling with how AI may transform religion altogether.
Will artificial intelligence help us better understand religion, transform it or even replace the human element?
Whether it is ChatGPT, Dating Apps, a Netflix search or a recommendation on amazon –AI already has a godlike intervention in our lives.
People have long turned to the internet for answers about religion.
But now AI is being used to translate the bible into rare languages. And specialized religious chatbots are even popping up – like AI-powered virtual imams, a Jewish prayer chatbot and a Hindu robot priest.
Last month people packed a Lutheran church in Germany to hear a sermon generated by AI and delivered by a ChatGPT.
Faith leaders are considering the potential – and the risks. It could free up faith leaders to do less research and spend more time with their congregations.
But ChatGPT and other chatbots have had problems with accuracy, And they also lack emotion and context typically required when speaking about religious questions
As AI comes to be used by billions of people, there is even talk about new sects devoted to the worship of artificial intelligence or a chatbot as a higher being.
